Jazzy Jackets

Class Description: Reversable Jackets constructed with collage techhniques
Join Barbara on a 3-day journey to create your own reversable jacket. Class will begin with a day of measuring and pattern making. We will discuss lapels and pockets and how to make them reversable. Learn proper layout of silk and wool to ensure the shape and fit for your jacket comes out as planned. The class will focus on the three "F's"... Felting, Fulling and Fitting. Learn what constitutes a finished felt, how to correct and work with the "happy accident" and discuss finishing touches including buttons, belts and embellishments.
This class is open to students with basic wet felting experience as well as those with extensive skills. Students with more experience will accomplish more in the time aloted. This class requires long periods of standing, upper body strength and bending.

Materials: Materials may be brought to class and will be available for purchase during class. Students will receive a 30% discount on all fibers purchased during class.

What to bring to class: Plan your jacket. Bring a notebook with collage and design ideas.

This is a collage fabric vest. You will need a total of 3- 5 yards of fabric for your jacket. The fabrics should be various light weight natural fabrics (some can have inclusions such as lurex, but avoid pure polyester. The definition of light weight for this class YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE THROUGH THE FABRIC. Translucent - Transparent fabrics work best. This is a collage fabric project so choose patterns and colors that resonate with each other. Good fabrics to look for, silk chiffon, silk habotai, cotton lawn, loose weave linen, cotton gauze, wool gauze, silk gauze

Optional, bring inclusions to add to your designs, such as silk fibers, Angelina or other fibers and yarns. Silk fabric is available for purchase from Opulent Fibers and the instructor during class.

  • 19µ Merino wool 6 - 10 ounces in your color palette
  • Silk tops (optional) in your color palette.
  • Pool cover or small bubble wrap taped together with duct tape, the size should be 5'x 10'
  • Extra piece of small bubble wrap about 11"x14"
  • Duct tape
  • Packing foam for the resist. Purchase in class or ahead at Lowes or Home Depot as under flooring, white foam. You need a piece that measures 5'x8' Try to get the widest so you do not have to do too much taping. When taping together use duct tape and tape both sides.
  • Pool noodle
  • Netting such as an old sheer curtain the same 5' x 9'
  • Soap that you like to use, I recommend olive oil soap, such "kiss my face"
  • 3 pairs of knee high hose
  • 1 quart bucket
  • 1 car sponge
  • 2 large towels, beach towels work really well.

Artful Dresses
Class Description: Design, Dye, Felt • Artful Dresses

Join Barbara on a 3-day journey to create your own artistic statement dress. Class will begin with a day of measuring, pattern making and dyeing silk with discussion on color and manipulation of color. Learn proper layout of silk and wool to ensure the shape and fit for your garments comes out as planned. The class will focus on the three "F's"... Felting, Fulling and Fitting. Learn what constitutes a finished felt, how to correct and work with the "happy accident" and discuss finishing touches including buttons, belts and embellishments.

This class is open to all levels of feltmakers. Students with more experience will accomplish more in the time aloted. This class requires long periods of standing, upper body strength and bending.

Materials: Materials may be brought to class and will be available for purchase during class. Students will receive a 30% discount on all fibers purchased during class.

What to bring to class: Plan your dress. Bring a worksheet filled out dress ideas. Keep it simple. Think A-line or wrap dress T shirt style, sleeves are ok.

Create your own unique piece of wearable art. Felt, the oldest non-woven fabric, has come to the forefront as part of a renaissance of ancient techniques. Start with basic processes and explore your own ideas using felt as a medium. Create your pattern, lay out silk and wool, then complete felting and fulling. Learn what constitutes a finished felt, and how to correct errors and work with happy accidents. The techniques you learn can be applied to other felt projects. Prior experience is helpful, but all levels are welcome. Students will receive a supplies list in advance. Be prepared for a lot of standing and bending.
